Will Ferrell Lands a Triple Salchow Against Wilbur Robinson

Mr. Ferrell, on a hot streak with sports comedies, rides Blades of Glory to Number One on Friday with $12 million. Meet the Robinsons collects $7.7 million for a Number Two position...

And the Weinstein-Warner animated offering TMNT falls to #5 with a $31.8 million total.

Sunday Update: As predicted by the forecasts, MTR finished a solid second with $25 million for the weekend, behind the glorious Blades at $33 million. Compare that to TMNT's $24 million last weekend, and it looks like the new Disney flick did pretty decent in a tough weekend.

The turtle movie nabbed another $9.2 million for fourth, a 62% drop from last weekend (and yes, that's a big drop). If Robinsons holds up better than that next weekend, it could turn out to be a modest hit, though not any kind of blockbuster.

Very nice objective reporting. That's good journalism.

if ROBINSON's comes in 2nd with less than what TMNT opened with a week earlier, that would be very sad. The Disney brand has been so damaged in the last 5-6 years it may still take a lot of work to get good movies to come out and bring it back to an event like the current Pixar openings where people really want to see their films.

Really?, are you surprised?
MTR had the worst marketing ever.

I don't think you can ever discount the flicks you have competing against you in the marketplace.

Robinsons clearly dealt TMNT a major blow. Blades of Glory was the picture to beat this weekend.

A year ago, Da Vinci Code negatively impacted Over the Hedge.

YEA! MTR with its Disney muscle beat the TMNT opening weekend by at least 700k, I really thought it would of won the weekend though.

...although MTR should definitely have longer legs than those turtles..

As for the marketing comment above. i admit. the marketing doesnt make me want to see it. I havent seen the film but I hope its nothing like the way its portrayed in the commercials.

To me, it was nothing like it was portrayed in the commercials and marketing. They way they marketed it did not match what kind of film it turned out to be.

This film surprised me in so many ways. Not perfect, the second act had a bit of jumping around, but there really wasn't too much of it. Halfway through it truly picks up, and by the end of the film, I felt a real emotional connection to this film that I hadn't experienced during a Disney Feature Animated film in a long, long time.
Overall, I think this is my favorite WDFA film since Tarzan.

MTR was really artist driven, for the first time in a long-time and the artist driving the bus was director Steve Anderson, who weathered some HUGE bumps in the road. Standing right behind him were artists at WDFA who resurrected the picture by screaming bloody murder when a previous studio adminstration wanted to bury it.
Among Steve's accomplishments: He persuaded top brass at WDFA to give "screenplay by" credit to story artists (amazing! what a concept!) as well as screenwriters. Lasseter and crew came in late to this pic and demanded changes, but let Steve and co. decide how to make them (another AMAZING idea!).

Steve and his producer, Dorothy asked a lot of artists, but no more than they asked of themselves. In the past, I've known Disney directors to "pretend" to fire employeees as a prank and a.p.m's who have made snarky comments to artists about the artists' salaries, as in "I know what you make and you're not worth it." It's amazing how much bad behavior was allowed at the studio. No-wait. This is Hollyweird. I guess it's not amazing. Maybe what's amazing is that it didn't happen this time.

Steve and Dorothy treated people with respect. And the movie has more story, heart and integrity than any of the last Disney flicks-WDFA has reason to feel good about it. Let's hope MTR rocks long and hard at the box office, so Steve and Dorothy and their talented crew will get more opportunities to create more great films together.
